Ballet rehearsal
Oct. 21st, 2025 07:57 pmHi lovelies,
I'm in ballet rehearsal right now. :) My roles this year are really fun and super mecore--I'm in rehearsal for the Party scene, where I play a life-sized creepy Harlequin doll. After this, I have Battle rehearsal, where I'm THE RAT KING!!! Hopefully I'll get three heads and a giant cape >:) And yeah, I'm a girl Rat King. Deal with it >:)
Besides those, I'm also an Angel (a pointe dance, very hexciting!) and a Flower (I picked this one as my obligatory Corps dance, since I never got to be a Flower growing up). For those who don't know ballet, the corps de ballet is the lowest rank in a ballet company, and is all of the dancers that aren't soloists or principals. Don't let the ranking fool you, corps pieces are INCREDIBLY difficult due to the effort of getting a large number of dancers all to be present at the same time (since this is a student club, we have to contend with classes and life getting in the way) and to be synchronized and clean. Last Nutcracker, I wasn't in a corps dance, and I REALLY felt that absence--I was like, wait, why am I not in pink tights and a tutu right now?!? (I wore a slinky fringed ensemble with nude tights for Arabian/Coffee, which is slightly racist, but you can't get rid of Arabian, it's a fan favorite. And I wore all black and shitty rat ears to be a rat. Although, we're planning on making full rat heads this year >:DDD). I kind of wish I was in Snow, because that dance looks incredibly gorgeous and is SUCH an achievement, but I'm already in too many other dances, and snow is a REALLY HARD dance due to its length, complexity, and the amount of people... next year, though. Oh, and I'm choreographing Spanish/Chocolate, basing it on this video:
I had to adapt it to have three girls instead of two girls and a guy, since we have exactly ONE boy in our ballet club and he's the Nutcracker, sooo... It's coming along super nicely, though! My dancers are angels for keeping up with my extremely confusing and poorly directed teaching, haha. But it looks SOOOO good! When you're choreographing a canon (where different dancers come in at different times), it can be really hard to visualize it in your head, so sometimes you just have to throw the choreography at the dancers and hope it looks good. Thankfully, I managed to come up with something that looks good! I'm so excited! I just have to teach the very last 8 counts, which will be fine--it's a pique attitude out, pique attitude backstage, double-time pique arabesques with "giving" arms, glissade, saut de chat. Then I wanted them to chaine to a final pose, but it might just have to be a run. I have to figure out that pose, but it'll be easy--I think the soloist in a lunge, cambre back, arm high fifth, and 2 corps standing in tendu derriere with first arabesque arms. There :) I have this in the bag
Anyway, today was the first time the rest of Party corps saw the Dolls dancing. I could feel lots of eyes on me as I did my Harlequin doll dance, which is full of jumps. I'm pretty good at jumps, especially saut de chat/grand jete developpe, and once my teacher described me as having the power of a Category 5 Hurricane. Today, my choreographer told me I was a "powerhouse" for doing all those jumps >:) I'm totally going to knock it out of the park onstage!
Woaw, this post is long. Can you tell I REALLY like ballet...
