SHE CAN’T STOP WINNING!!!!!!!
Oct. 15th, 2025 04:08 pmI GOT AN 8/10 ON A QUIZ THAT I WAS REALLY WORRIED ABOUT!! The class average was 6.5!!! I did much better than average! I’m so happy! I’m probably on track for yet another B+, that’s the grade I usually get in my classes… anyway, the reason why I was super worried about that quiz was because it kind of stacked up with other stressors including a chinese test that same week. Which I abso-fucking-lutely fumbled. I went and repented to my prof, and she was super nice and understanding :) She recommended me to read along with an audio recording to improve my skills at recognizing characters. She also said, and I quote, “You showed up to the test, so don’t worry, you’ll be fine!” Like DAMN no one gaf about this class, huh… Anyway she also complimented my earrings. She said “Every time you come into class, I look at your earrings, it’s like a series of different meats…” and I said “Oh, thanks! I made these. I also made this necklace, and patched my battle jacket, and drew the art on my bag” and she was SPELLBOUND it was so funny. I love doing stuff like this. It reminds me that I am superior to those brainwashed masses that do not realize you can make things of your own free will! I simply don’t understand why so many people think I bought my battle jacket. Does this seriously look like professional-quality stitching?
Oh, well. I guess I’m a little happier than I was when I made my earlier post, but the problems still remain. I will have to continue learning how to live without the comfort of degradation and self-deprecation…
This post is going to be tagged with both hysteriagirl and fleshmaiden because I think we’re mixing at the moment.

Date: 2025-10-20 06:04 am (UTC)I remember studying Chinese kind of casually some years back, and it struck me then how much philosophy is really tied into language. Something especially apparent when going from a western to eastern language and vice versa. Currently, I'm kind of trying to learn Vietnamese over Duolingo. I'm learning some, but I'm not sure how well I'm actually retaining it. I've also worked with a number of Vietnamese pharmacists... at least one of whom was a refugee. We had quite a few refugees come to the town I live in, and a number of them still don't speak much English. This pharmacist was around 10 years old or so when she came here. Her dad had died in a refugee camp prior to her arriving. We would talk about the differences in language and culture every so often. I remember her telling me that plurals were weird to her, that they were redundant. Like, if you already indicate that there's more than one of something, why do you have to change the noun also to also indicate that there's more than one of it?

Date: 2025-10-20 09:25 pm (UTC)My family is actually from Hong Kong and my first language was Cantonese, unfortunately I never learned to write in Chinese characters and have mostly forgotten it due to lack of practice ;; but anyway my parents have difficulty with (a) gendered pronouns, since there's only one in Chinese (b) verb tenses, since they are actually way easier in Chinese than in English. Also, Mandarin Chinese sounds themselves are easily understandable from an English-speaking standpoint imo, it's nothing like French (which I studied and hated in high school). It's pretty easy to recognize "ni hao". Tones and characters are a different story, but we are allowed to just type phonetics on a digital Chinese keyboard for this class, haha. I still hate it and want out!!! I'm so bad at reading characters...
